Craft cannabis? Hand-crafted cannabis? Small batch cannabis? What’s the difference?
What is the difference between commercial and craft cannabis?
Craft cannabis, also known as small-batch cannabis, is cannabis that is grown on a small scale, allowing the growers to create the best environment for the best quality cannabis. Craft cannabis producers also focus on environmentally-friendly and sustainable approaches to production.
Craft cannabis is usually defined by three major features; size of facility, detailed-oriented care, and high product quality.
Small Facility Size
When it comes to the culture and practices of craft growers, the size of the facility, or flowering rooms, matters a great deal.
Having a smaller growing room allows for a more personalized lighting, watering cycles, and drying for the individual strains being grown. This allows the growers to hone in on the individual needs of the strain, to address it, and bring out the best qualities of the cannabis.
Oftentimes, in large commercial growing warehouses, we see multiple strains being grown together, sharing the same environments, and receiving minimal care. Significantly hindering the full potential of the cannabis, and resulting in a lower quality product.
In order for us to cultivate the highest quality cannabis, we must pay great attention to the details of growing.
The biggest difference between commercial and craft cannabis growers is their trimming process. Unlike commercial growers, craft growers prefer to trim their plants by hand, rather than by machine. The reason being, when you trim by machine, you end up losing a lot of trichomes.
Trichomes, the white crystals that grow on the flowers, are an important factor in maintaining the quality of the cannabis. They are home to the cannabinoids and terpenes, the most important compounds of cannabis that create the effects we feel.
High product quality
Hand Trimming, in addition to the detailed manipulation of the growing environment, allows for the full potential of the cannabis to be unleashed; resulting in an extremely aromatic, flavourful, and potent product.
What’s the difference between craft cannabis and handcrafted cannabis?
Hand-crafted cannbis refers to cannbis grown with a focus on production by hand, allowing them to personalize the process for some of the highest quality cannabis in the world.
Cannabis that is handcrafted is usually hand-trimmed, hang dried, and hand-packed. Therefore, these operations tend to be smaller and more detail-focused.
As we have already discussed, hand trimming allows for the retention of trichomes, leading to a more potent product, but this process also has other benefits:
By hand-trimming, you can produce cannbis without any excess sugar leaves. This has multiple benefits, including allowing more light to the bud; aiding the growing process, and increasing the airflow to the lower canopy of the plant.
Hand-trimming also allows the growers to prevent pests, as special attention is given to every bud.
Hang drying the cannabis naturally, has a multitude of benefits; the cannabis produced is more aromatic, more flavourful, and more potent. It also increases the shelf life of the cannabis, and allows for smoother inhalation.
Hand packaging is the cherry on top. Detailed and high quality packaging shows the personality of the company, and makes the experience feel a lot more luxurious.
In addition to visuals, handcrafted cannabis producers often take this opportunity to use sustainable and recycled packaging to reduce wastes in the production process.
